Clovis Retif

An instinctive artist and visual storyteller, Clovis Retif explores objects and symbols as fragments of stories. After a period in design followed by several years of creative work in Canada, he developed a free practice in Paris blending drawing, painting, and pastel. Curious and multifaceted, he extends his universe to ceramics, textiles, and furniture. Exhibiting from Montreal to New York and collaborating with houses such as Hermès and Louis Vuitton, he continues his work with a singular aesthetic and a deep love of narrative.

What is your story, your genesis?
My name is Clovis Retif, I was born in Paris in the '90s. I'm a visual artist and designer. I grew up in a family of curious people, and I've never understood why curiosity is called a nasty flaw when I consider it one of the finest qualities.

What has shaped your taste (in the broadest sense)? Reading, films, exhibitions, cooking. Over time, you end up shaping your own taste and aesthetic.

What craftsmanship was passed down to you?
Experimentation. Trying, making mistakes, hitting a wall, and persevering until you see things through. Whether it's a success or a failure, it's always another experience, and therefore a form of success in the end.

What value do you try to pass on in turn? Gentleness, curiosity, and perseverance.

What would you have liked to be able to do with your hands? Play the piano...

What is most French about you? My name is Clovis—need I say more?

What is your greatest adventure? Leaving to make a living from my drawing in Canada.

What is your favorite bistro or iconic restaurant? Far too many to choose from, but I'll say my friends at ‹Cagnard›.

Which icon do you think best represents France? I've always been a fan of Brassens. In fact, I have the complete collection of all his LPs and 45s.

What is your mantra or a motto that guides your life? A falling tree makes more noise than a growing forest.

Is there an object or work that best embodies France? You only need to look up when walking in Paris to find its quintessence.

Who would you find at your table for an ideal dinner? Buddha, Maupassant, Brassens of course, Desproges and my mom.

What would your ideal menu be (starter-main course-dessert + pairings)? Japanese fatty tuna sashimi with cold sake, Peking duck with a large bottle of beer, and praline Paris-Brest with a Vieille Prune, of course!

What is your best gastronomic memory? Hard to choose just one, but my father's fries are exceptional.

What does La Vieille Prune de Souillac evoke for you? As a child, I spent my summers in the Dordogne. There was Vieille Prune at home and in every restaurant, so it reminds me of August months in Montignac.
